Rosamond Spencer Bechtel, Roz, was born in Montreal, but grew up in Halifax, surrounded by an ocean that would cast a spell on her all her life. While living and playing on the coast was very much a part of life there, it was not until the family moved back to Upper Canada that Roz realized how much Maritime life was part of her being. Having grown up in a household filled with family art (both grandmothers were painters) art school seemed a natural extension of her education. Roz was drawn to Fine Arts at York University, graduating with A Bachelor of Fine Arts in design, drawing and typography, pursuits close to the architecture she was fascinated by. Roz worked for a design firm in Toronto, doing corporate design and illustration, and later began freelancing upon having children, both in Toronto and after moving to Kingston in 1989. She began painting in earnest several years ago, enjoying experimenting with different media to bring to life the drawings her training had allowed her to master. Roz’s spare time is spent enjoying family adventures, beachcombing, photography, sewing, golf. She is married with three grown children. Every year, Roz finds a way to get to the coast. She thrives on the coast. Period.
